For the indigenous inhabitants of this area, the Cree Indians, this not only meant displacement from their traditional hunting and fishing grounds; it also entailed abandoning an entire way of life. Canada is a signatory state of the United Nations Genocide Convention. Yet the case filed by the Crees against the James-Bay project was dismissed on the grounds that their interests had to be subordinated to those of the nation.
